Is October a good time to visit New Zealand?

October is a good time to visit New Zealand if you want to take advantage of the lower prices, smaller crowds and mild conditions of “shoulder season”. In most places, winter has ended and spring has sprung – although you can still cash in on the final weeks of the ski season in the mountains. With mild temperatures and lower rainfall in many regions, it’s a superb time for activities like hiking and biking without the summer heat or summer crowds. Spring is also a time of festivals and celebrations, so there are plenty of events and activities to take part in, too.

Best things to do in New Zealand in October

Plan a road trip

October is shoulder season for many New Zealand tourism operators, which means you can take advantage of discounted prices on many attractions and services. This includes renting a car, so with the onset of warmer weather it’s a great time to find a van or rental that works for you and plan your own perfect self-drive New Zealand itinerary. Given smaller crowds, you might even have many places all to yourself.

Go fishing

October marks the official start of the New Zealand fishing season in many regions (particularly for salmon and trout fisheries in the rivers). From day-long charter boats to quiet riverside spots where you can leisurely throw in your own line, there are endless fishing opportunities across New Zealand to explore. Popular destinations for serious fishers include the South Island’s Marlborough Sounds and the Hauraki Gulf, both known for red snapper.

Nelson: Art Festival and Abel Tasman National Park

Nelson is one of the warmest and sunniest regions of the South Island, and October is a wonderful time to visit. The superb Nelson Art Festival also makes October a wonderful time to explore this charming city and region. Catch a show, join the famous Mask Carnivale parade, take a day trip to the Marlborough wine region, or head into Abel Tasman National Park to enjoy stunning white-sand beaches and crystalline waters.
