Assessing Riding Ability

To ensure safety and enjoyment, River Valley recommends that riders assess their riding ability before booking:

  • Intermediate: Confident and in control on a moving horse at all paces outside an arena but not riding regularly.
  • Strong Intermediate: An intermediate rider who is currently riding regularly (outside an arena) and is comfortable in the saddle for at least six hours per day.
  • Advanced: A frequent rider who is very fit, has an independent seat and soft hands, and is confident on a forward-moving horse at all paces over rough and variable ground on open terrain.

It's important to note that River Valley's multi day treks are not suitable for beginner riders.

If you prefer coastal riding, Muriwai Beach Horse Treks on Auckland’s west coast is an excellent choice, with guided rides along the black sand beach and through Woodhill Forest, suitable for beginners and experienced riders alike. These destinations provide a great introduction to New Zealand’s diverse landscapes and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Meet The Horses

There are a variety of personalities at the Stables. Most are crossbred, including the Kaimanawa (NZ Wild Horse). The Stables currently includes seven geldings and three mares.

Natural Horsemanship Philosophy

At River Valley Stables, the emphasis is on fostering a deep connection between horse and rider. All horses are ridden bitless and barefoot, promoting a more natural and harmonious riding experience. This approach encourages communication and trust, allowing riders to engage with their horses in a more intuitive manner.

What is a Kaimanawa Horse?

Kaimanawa wild (feral) horses are found grazing in small family bands within the boundaries of the New Zealand Defence Force Army Training Area at Waiouru, located in the central North Island of New Zealand. The first recorded sighting of wild horses in this area dates back to 1876, approximately 62 years after the Reverend Samuel Marsden introduced the first horses to New Zealand in 1814.

Although Kaimanawa horses now exhibit distinct physical characteristics, they are the result of various introductions over time, adding to the original feral population. Among these influences are the descendants of Welsh and Exmoor ponies, sheep station hacks, an Arab stallion, a Clydesdale stallion, and cavalry mounts, among others.

Today, the Kaimanawa herd is recognized as having heritage significance due to its unique genetic makeup and historical importance.
