Christchurch to Kaikoura: A Marine Wonderland
Today you'll journey through North Canterbury's beautiful rural scenery to the town of Kaikoura, a marine wonderland where towering mountains meet the sea.
Kaikoura's most famous residents are the many whales and dolphins who feast on the abundant seafood in its waters. Sperm whales visit year-round, while the mighty humpback is a regular visitor in June and July.

Kaikoura to Nelson via the Marlborough Wine Region
Leaving Kaikoura, you'll explore the picturesque Marlborough region en route to New Zealand's sunshine capital: Nelson.

Outside the city of Blenheim, on the "Golden Mile" wine trail you can sample world-renowned Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cuvee. Nelson itself is a creative city with many galleries and artisan stores. The jeweler who created the One Ring for the Lord of the Rings movies is based here, and you can even buy your own identical replica. At the edge of town, you can climb Botanical Hill to find a lookout right at the geographical centre of New Zealand. Today you'll swap the city streets for the breathtaking bays and lush forests of Abel Tasman National Park.

Start the day with a gentle cruise through park's picturesque bays, disembarking at whichever golden beach takes your fancy. Step away from the shore to investigate the bush-lined Abel Tasman Coast Track: you'll discover to forest pools, waterfalls, fern groves and swing bridges over rushing rivers.
If bushwalking feels too energetic in this relaxing environment, that's ok too: stay onboard your cruise vessel and soak up the coastal views as you sail into the spectacular northern reaches of the park and the Tonga Island Marine Reserve.

Nelson to the Wild West Coast
Journey to Punakaiki on the South Island's rugged and remote West Coast, one of New Zealand's most unspoiled and ancient destinations.
The route takes you inland through diverse landscapes, with farmland giving way to dramatic mountain passes and rushing rivers. Emerging at the coast for the final stretch, you're rewarded with magnificent windswept ocean views on your right and steep, rainforested mountains on your left.

TranzAlpine Train Journey to Christchurch
Continue down the scenic coast highway to the small town of Greymouth to drop off your car and head to the railway station: it's time to board the TranzAlpine Train and embark on one of the greatest scenic train journeys in the world.

The TranzAlpine's purpose-built carriages, complete with huge picture windows, ensure that you won't miss a thing. Keep your camera ready as you snake through Arthur's Pass, descend into spectacular gorges, and rumble over the massive Staircase Viaduct on the Waimakariri River.
