Return your rental vehicle at Wellington Airport and fly to Nelson, where you will collect your South Island rental car. Receiving some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand, the Nelson district it the perfect destination to visit year round. 

Nelson has a large creative community of working artists that gives the town a laid-back, bohemian feel. Passionate wine makers and craft beer brewers in the area mean that sitting in the sun with the tipple of your choice is a lovely way to enjoy the town centre.

You'll then travel to the cliff top area called Ruby Bay. This is an excellent base to explore the Abel Tasman National Park and the nearby dining precinct at Mapua Wharf and the satellite town of Motueka.

Full Steam Ahead
All aboard the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw this old coal-fired beauty has been ferrying passengers around the lake for over a 100 years. Kids find the experience fascinating and love watching the stokers at work in the engine room and seeing the glowing fireboxes.

On arrival at Walter Peak High Country Farm on the western shores of Lake Wakatipu, you will get a real taste for rural New Zealand.
