Auckland to the Bay of Islands: Discover Northland

Begin your adventure by journeying north to the Bay of Islands: en route, you'll discover the secrets of some of New Zealand's most beloved elders, the ancient Kauri trees of the Northland.

Matakohe Kauri Museum
The award-winning Kauri Museum in Matakohe explores what became of Kauri trees after they were felled by humans. Their strong, durable timber and gum were highly prized by settlers, with a flourishing industry that shaped New Zealand's future. In addition to preserving our past, the Museum plays a vital role in conserving the future of the mighty Kauri.

Historic Russell
Arriving in the Bay of Islands, you'll step back in time to peaceful Russell: this exquisite historic village was New Zealand's first ever capital, known as "The Hell Hole of the Pacific" and once famed for its lawlessness!

Sleep soundly tonight at New Zealand's first ever licensed hotel — the iconic Duke of Marlborough – right by the waterfront, with a front-row seat for the sunset over the harbour and beyond.

Bay of Islands: Historical “Cream Trip” Cruise

A stunning Maritime Park spanning 144 islands, the Bay of Islands is a sub-tropical paradise brimming with hidden bays and a wealth of marine life. Today you'll discover the Bay in the very best way — by taking to the water.

Historical "Cream Trip" Cruise
This fabulous day-long excursion is the most extensive historical cruise in the Bay of Islands. In 1927, Ernest Fuller began delivering mail and supplies to the Bay's inner islands by boat, collecting cream from the farmers to take back to the mainland. He soon began inviting tourists to tag along for the "Cream Trip," and the rest is history.

These days the journey is more comfortable on a modern, multi-level catamaran, but you’ll experience the same idyllic bays, local homes and the prominent natural landmarks like the 'Hole in the Rock' near Cape Brett.

Marine mammals are abundant so the chance to see whales, seals, dolphins and other wildlife are high. The leisurely pace allows you to get up close and even swim with the dolphins if conditions permit!

Napier: Geothermal Wonders & Glorious Art Deco

On your way toward Napier via Great Lake Taupo, stop and enjoy a soak in one of New Zealand's picturesque wild hot springs.

Natural Hot Pools & Wai-O-tapu Thermal Reserve
Kerosene Creek is a beautiful hot stream right in the middle of the lush native bush, and we highly recommend stopping for a quick soak!

Close to Kerosene Creek is Wai-O-tapu, a wonderland of geothermal activity. This is the home to the world famous Champagne Pool, one of the most beautiful examples of geothermal activity around. New Zealand’s largest bubbling mud pool is surrounded by huge volcanic craters making the experience very otherworldly — but wait, there is more... the Highlight is the Lady Knox Geyser that spectacularly erupts daily at 10.15am

Napier - New Zealand's Art Deco City
The coastal city of Napier has a unique feel and atmosphere, thanks to its exquisitely preserved 1930s architecture. Arriving here is like stepping back in time.
This colourful, sunny city was flattened by an earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in the favoured style of the day. Today, Napier is one of the few fully intact Art Deco cities in existence.

Arrowtown: Treasure of the Gold Rush Era

Arrowtown
Sitting alongside the gold-bearing Arrow River, you'll find one of the most picturesque settlements in New Zealand. Welcome to historic Arrowtown.

This delightful-looking township was established in 1862 after a local sheep shearer struck gold. Within a year, over 1500 miners flooded here to try their luck, constructing wooden cottages, cobbled streets, shops, and churches, many of which remain today. The result is a town overflowing with character, surrounded by shadowy forested mountains.

Come in autumn and you'll see the hillsides ablaze with a covering of crimson and golden leaves. It's a photographer's delight! Try panning for gold yourself on the Arrow River's shores. Who knows, you might strike it rich before you return to Queenstown this evening!
