John was chosen for building the observatory in the 1960s after several years' site research. The observatory started astronomical research on 1965. Reasons for Mt John being chosen were because of its light pollution free environment along with the largest number of clear nights, its’ elevation, accessibility and most of all its latitude. Located at latitude 44 degrees south, It is the southern most observatory on Earth. You can observe the most southern objects throughout the year. When arriving at the observatory, guides will take you for a naked eye tour for about 15 minutes. After allowing some time for your eyes to adapt to the darkness, your guides will take you to a dome which is used for public viewing. Using a 16 inch telescope and large binoculars guides will show you amazing sights such as our own Milky Way Galaxy, the Southern Cross, Alpha-Centauri. You may also have the opportunity to see star clusters like the beautiful Jewel Box, awe inspiring planets, immense clouds of gas and dust, and distant galaxies which test the limits of human imagination.
