This east coast paradise is a cultural and historical landmark, renowned for big game fishing and a colourful, turbulent past. Russell is the site of New Zealand's first sea port and was also the first capital of New Zealand. The original street plan and buildings from 1843 still remain today, including 'Christ Church' - the country's oldest church. In early years the town harboured whalers and seamen; a fairly rough bunch, which helped to give the town its name ‘Hellhole of the Pacific’. The surrounding area was also privy to some fierce conflicts between European settlers and local Maori tribes. In the local church, the graveyard pays fascinating testament to these battles as do the old bullet holes that can still be seen in the church walls. Today, Russell is a more serene place to visit - friendly locals welcome you to boutique hotels, gourmet restaurants, cafés and some wonderful boutique shopping. It is also a gateway to the magical Bay of Islands.
